An Maidirín Rua Bushcraft
Our Trip To An Maidirín Rua Bushcraft in Ballinaclough by Anna Ryan
This week our class travelled to An Maidirín Rua, an organic farm in Ballina clough run by Paul and Therese Dillon.
The day began when we giddily arrived at our school, clutching gear bags filled with necessary items such as spare clothes, old runners, raincoats, wellies, lunch boxes and water bottles. Some of us even decided to bring swimsuits! There was a great atmosphere in the classroom, filled with excitement, as everyone was extremely eager to board the bus for our day out. At half nine the bus arrived and every pupil boarded it gleefully. Everyone was in a joyful mood for the rest of the bus ride. The air was continuously filled with the constant chitter chatter of eighteen pupils.
As soon as we arrived we were split into two groups. In our class, it was easier to do boys and girls as we have an even number of each. The girls were split into two further groups and one group trekked after Camillia on a very informative nature walk learning about dandelions, honey bees and an ancient Irish well. Meanwhile, the other group were with Ken and built rafts, tied complex knots and canoed downstream. At lunchtime, the whole class reunited in the woods where we ravenously munched down our snacks. We sat under the canopy of a huge parachute. It was the nearest experience ever to I'm a celebrity! The girls watched enviously as the boys toasted marshmallows for their smores! For the next, while we all busied ourselves playing on the rope bridge, the very impressive wood swing, eating wild garlic and generally exploring and having a lot of fun amid nature.
After lunch, it was the girl's turn to experience the woods with Tom Bán. Together we built campfires, made up canopy roofs and made teepees! After all this hard work we were exhausted! Then we got to toast our smores with Tom Bán. They were sweet, rich and gooey and tasted absolutely divine! Tom Bán was such an inspiring character full of lots of intriguing stories! We really enjoyed the banter with him.
At the end of the day, we packed up and headed back to the bus. Everyone was exhausted but all agreed we had the most fantastic day out. When asked, we all had the same thing to say…CAN WE COME BACK NEXT YEAR????
